Water Softeners remove hardness from water by a process known as ion exchange. The media, called resin; in the softener is charged with sodium (or potassium) ions. When the hardness ions come in contact with the resin beads the hardness ions are collected and the sodium (or potassium) ions are released, thus the term ion exchange. The hardness ions are exchanged for sodium (or potassium) ions. The typical cautions found in the raw water are exchanged within the resin bed for sodium or potassium, as shown in the illustration. Normally, when two-thirds of the resin bed is exhausted, the softener will allow hardness to slip through. When this occurs, it is time to regenerate or recharge the resin bed using a salt and water mixture, known as brine. Sodium chloride (NaCl) or potassium chloride (KCl) are normally used for this purpose. Regenerating the resin bed refreshes its ability to exchange ions.

Mineral Water Plant

The pH value is an indicator for acidity, alkalinity, or basic. A pH value of 7 means a substance is neutral. The lower value indicates acidity, and a higher value is a sign of alkalinity.

So, what does pH mean for your drinking water? Basically, the pH value determines whether water is hard or soft. The normal range for pH in surface water systems is 6.5 to 8.5 and for groundwater systems 6 to 8.5. Alkalinity is a measure of the capacity of the water to resist a change in pH that would tend to make the water more acidic. The measurement of alkalinity and pH is needed to determine how corrosive the water is.

Water with a pH > 8.5 could indicate that the water is hard. Hard water does not pose a health risk, but can cause aesthetic problems. These problems include an alkali taste to the water (making that morning coffee taste bitter!), formation of a deposit on dishes, utensils, and laundry basins, difficulty in getting soaps and detergents to lather, and formation of insoluble precipitates on clothing.

Acidic water can cause health problems and damage metal piping. Acid Neutralizers balance your water's pH to ensure safe drinking water. Water Softeners & Filters has a great selection of acid neutralizers, order yours today.
